The vehicle had drifted to about twelve meters from the lip by late Thursday morning, reports Buffalo News. The social media video shows it turned upside down and rocked on its roof.

The International Niagara Board of Control has requested the New York Power Authority to transfer water at a power upstream to reduce river flows over the falls during the rescue effort.

A dramatic scene happened on Wednesday when a sedan and driver were carried to about 45 meters from the edge of the falls, where the vehicle appeared to be stuck on the rocks.

National Post reported that a Coast Guard helicopter from Detroit arrived at 1:30 p.m., an hour after the call was made. The driver, a woman who was in her 60’s, was removed from the vehicle but pronounced dead on the scene. Her cause for death hasn’t been officially known.

Niagara Falls State Park Operations Team is trying to figure out how to get the car out of the water, a media advisory stated this afternoon.

And while it’s not known how the car got in there, it appeared to be through “an intentional act,” the advisory said.

It adds that the woman’s identity has yet to be confirmed through the medical examiner or coroner’s office.
