He ran in a vehicle, which was stopped by officers nearby in an affluent area and home to many embassies and the palace, the London residence of Prince William, his wife Kate, and their three children. It is home to several members of the royal family.

The police force said, “shots were fired, and a man experienced gunshot wounds.” He was found dead at the scene.

Police say the incident is not treated as terrorism.

The force said the police standards body had been called in, as is usual, for shootings involving the police.
