The Government is offering new advice for many Canadians who are still in Ethiopia amid worsening conflicts in that country: “Leave immediately.”

“Canada is very concerned by the faster-deteriorating security situation in Ethiopia,” Minister said.

“From November 18, we have been asking Canadians to avoid travel to Ethiopia. We are asking Canadians who are there to leave immediately if it is safe to do so. Should the situation continue to worsen, the availability of commercial flights could soon become very limited.”

She added, “Ultimately, Canadians are responsible for their safety and should make the best decisions for their families, based on their situations.”

The Canadian Embassy in the Ethiopian state of Addis Ababa is open, but assistance is limited. Joly warned Canadians “should not count on flights” if things worsen.

Officials warned earlier in November that the country’s security situation is deteriorating quickly. Fighting between the Government and rebel power in the northern region has been seen amid regional and ethnic tensions over the past year.

There are allegations of human rights abuses against both sides in the fight.

The United Nations estimates two million people are now displaced as a result.
